Gir National Park

Gir National Park

The Gir Forests Reserve, established in 1913 to save the biggest remaining prides of Asiatic lions, received sanctuary status in 1965. Since the sanctuary's founding, over hundred Asiatic lions have been bred therein. Visitors are taken around in protected vehicle trips with a guide. In addition to lions, there are also leopards, wild pigs, spotted deer, nilgai antelopes, four-horned antelopes, and chinkaras (a type of gazelle). There are a few crocodiles in a sizable centre water hole. In close proximity to the Tulsi-Shyam Springs, the park also features a modest Krishna temple.

At the moment, the Gir forests of Gujarat (India) are the only site where this species of lion, known as the Asiatic lion, are  found in its native environment. Unlike the other great cats, the lion tolerates human presence and even lives near human settlements.

Besides 600+ Asiatic Lions and 350 Leopards, the park is home to 38 species of animals, 37 species of reptiles, 300 species of birds, and over 2,000 insect species, as well as a rich and diverse range of plant species.

The best time to visit Gir Sanctuary is between the months of October and May. The sanctuary is accessible to visitors during this time. The forest remains close from 16th June to 15 October, monsoon months of India and are mating period for the Lions. However one can visit Devalia Park during this period.
